Pest Control for the Environmentally Conscious Consumer

If you have a pest problem, chances are you have one thing on your mind—how do I get rid of these pests, quick fast and in a hurry. No one likes unexpected visitors, and if they have four or more legs, then are even less liked. That said, how could you get rid of these visitors without the toxic chemicals? Check out the tips below.

Green Pest Management
This type of pest management uses natural plant oils, or inorganic materials such as boric acid. Plaint oils such as rosemary, clove oil and winter greens can act as insecticides. According to Wikipedia green pest management is a, “biological control [that] include use of biological pest control, the use of natural mechanisms in primarily agricultural or home lawn and garden pest control. Examples include bacteria, bacillus thuringiensis, or nematodes for example, for control of grubs, such as Oriental Beetle grubs or and in the case of bacillus thuringiensis, for control of mosquitoes.”

Talk to your Pest Control Company
If you aren’t the do it yourself type, don’t fret. There are many pest control companies that offer green options. Since more and more people are becoming environmentally conscious all industries are taking note. Ask the pest control company you are thinking of hiring what options (if any) they do offer. You might be surprised on what they do have in terms of eco-friendly options.

Be on the Look
The best way to get rid of certain pests such as beetles is to pick them off any plants they may be in your garden. This may seem trivial, but it is a great eco-friendly option. Most of the time this does the trick and you don’t need to get chemicals involved.

Turn Off Outside Lights
Most know that outside lights attract bugs. Keeping outside lights off will cut the chances of bugs swarming around your lights, and getting in your home. Another benefit is it will cut down on your electric bill—a win, win.

Enlist the Help of Plants
Some plants actually deter bugs. Many herbs such as chives, rosemary, oregano and sage are great for your garden. Not only will you have fresh herbs to cook with, you will be making the rest of your garden safe from bugs. About.com lists the following to plants to get rid of these common pests:

·         Aphids - Chives, Coriander, Nasturtium
·         Ants - Tansy
·         Cabbage Moth - Hyssop, Mint (also clothes moths), Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Southernwood, Tansy, Thyme
·         Flies - Basil, Rue
·         Japanese Beetles - Garlic & Rue (When used near roses and raspberries), Tansy
·         Potato Bugs - Horseradish
·         Mosquitoes - Basil, Rosemary

These are just a few of many ways you can deter pests in an eco-friendly manner. If you need more information on eco-friendly options, ask your pest control company for a detailed list of options. Have you found green options that have worked for your home? If so, give us your tips in the comments below.

  4. Although pest control services vary from company to company when it comes to cost, quality and service one thing is for sure. Customers need to be a part of an Integrated Pest Management Plan. Much more success in controlling pests like cockroaches, spiders and ants is likely if the customer participates in following through with the recommendations made by their pest control operator.
