Did you know that termites outweigh all humans on earth and cause over 5 billion dollars in property damage each and every year. Termite damage is so common but yet it's rarely ever covered by homeowners insurance. The damage termites do to homes, property is more common than damage done by storm, fire and earthquakes each year. We have a saying in the pest control industry, it's not a matter of if but when. Termites are everywhere. They live in the ground foraging for structure, wood to build colonies. If you laid a piece of dead wood, a 2" x 4" board or any other wood out in the open, on the ground, it likely will get termites. They are part of Mother Natures recycle program. Only problem is they don't know the difference from a dead tree, a 2" x 4" board and your home.
I have personally seen homes destroyed by termites. I've seen entire walls crumble to the ground by these insect pests. The amount of damage subterranean termites can do is so substantial that having a inspection for termites should be done regularly as part of yearly home maintenance. Oklahoma has a heavy amount of termite infestations every year and treatment is absolutely a necessity to protect your home. If your home has not been treated in the past 5-7 years for termites then you might consider having the property looked at. Treatment for termites is not as expensive as one might think and it's far less than the repairs these pests typically do.
At EnviroTech Exterminating we offer Termidor for the treatment of termites. Termidor by BASF is one of the best products on the market for controlling termites. EnviroTech also offer's alternative choices such as Premise to help keep the costs of treatment to a minimum. Both of these products have shown tremendous results in controlling subterranean termites.
If you prefer a Baiting system EnviroTech Exterminating offers Advance Termite Bait System from BASF. EnviroTech Exterminating offers treatment and control for many pests and services the local Broken Arrow, Jenks, Bixby, Coweta and Tulsa Oklahoma metro area.

A Little About Bed Bugs & Treatment: Broken Arrow, Ok Pest Control
EnviroTech Exterminating
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Got Pests? Call (918) 282-7621
Online: www.GotPest.com
The United States had almost eradicated the bedbug problem, but according to a recent study by the University of Nebraska, bedbug infestation became significant again during 2001. These disgusting little creatures feed on human blood, are notoriously prolific and difficult to eradicate.
Historical Background
Bedbugs have been with us for centuries. They were a common part of the American landscape until the development of the pesticide DDT. The chemical was successfully used as a means of malaria control during World War II. Recognized as a potent weapon against unwanted insect pests, its popularity spread rapidly after the war. One of the results was the near eradication of bed bugs. Unfortunately, DDT is harmful to birds and was banned in 1972. Bedbugs had been given a new lease on life and again begun to proliferate. Incidents of bedbug infestation have been particularly pronounced since 2001. Bedbug resurgence is also attributed to the sharp increase in travel by the American public.
What are Bedbugs?
Bedbugs are small insects, and adults are only about 1/4 inch long. They are not particularly active during the daylight; they spend their nights reproducing and gorging on human blood. It takes 15 minutes for one of them to swell three times its size following a routine feeding. Bedbugs are reddish brown and, when not feeding, have flat bodies. An adult female can lay up to five eggs each day, and it takes 10 days for eggs to mature. Bedbugs do not spread disease; however, some people are allergic to the itchy rash resulting from the bites. An attack by bed bugs can also have considerable psychological effects.
How They Invade Homes
The presence of bedbugs has nothing to do with poor sanitation practices. While general untidiness provides them with more hiding places, bedbugs can invade even the most pristine dwellings. They are most commonly introduced by transporting them in on travel luggage or used furniture, especially mattresses and upholstered items. Once inside the residence, they can hide nearly anywhere a little fold or crack appears.
Determining Their Presence
Bedbugs are most often felt before they are seen. One means of distinguishing bedbug bites from other insects is that they usually appear as a line or cluster of small red spots, darker in the center. They will also itch because of the anticoagulant that the bugs emit. If you suspect the presence of bedbugs, check your mattress seams for signs of excrement. This will appear as lines of dark specks. Bedbugs shed their outer shells five times on their way to adulthood, so these light brown casings may also be visible. You should examine your sheets for blood smears. This would occur from killing an engorged bug while scratching or rolling over during the night.
Eliminate Them
Most efforts that people make to rid bedbugs are usually ineffective because of the rapid reproduction rate and varied hiding places of bedbugs. Even a professional exterminator requires several hours and multiple visits to complete the job. However, there are steps you can take to expedite the process and prevent a new infestation.

Even a professional exterminator requires several hours and multiple visits to complete the job. However, there are steps you can take to expedite the process and prevent a new infestation.
- Vacuum all reachable cracks. Pay particular attention to mattresses and upholstered furniture. Don't neglect openings in the baseboard and behind wall outlets. When completed, remove the vacuum cleaner bag from the premises.
- Wash all clothing, towels and bedding items in hot water. Bedbugs cannot survive high temperatures.
- Place non-washables in a dryer and run at a high level of heat for a half-hour.
- Set infested furniture outdoors for several hours in below freezing weather as an additional way to kill the bugs.
- A zippered allergy mattress cover of good quality kills any bugs and eggs remaining in the mattress after vacuuming.

EnviroTech Exterminating Inc. strives to stay abreast on all research pertaining to bed bugs, especially in light of the recent outbreak of bed bug cases throughout Tulsa, Oklahoma within the past few years. The following study of the effects of ozone on bed bugs was conducted by Purdue University.
The feasibility of using gaseous ozone to manage insect pests has received increased attention in recent years. Research in this area has focused primarily on stored product pests (Kells et al. 2001, Sousa et al. 2008, McDonough et al. 2011). Given the resurgence of bed bugs in the U.S. and other countries over the last decade, the question of whether ozone could be used in bed bug integrated pest management programs has been raised. Research designed to address this question is currently underway in our laboratory. Data presented here show that adult male bed bugs are susceptible to ozone, depending on the concentration of ozone used and the length of time that insects are exposed. Two devices capable of delivering ozone to laboratory fumigation chambers were used for this study; one delivered a high ozone concentration with short exposure times, and a second utilized a low ozone concentration with long exposure times. The overall goals of this research are to 1) determine the time and ozone concentration needed to reach 100% mortality in all bed bug life stages, and 2) learn more about the mode of action of ozone in insects and strategies insects might use to survive ozone exposure.
You can read the report by Purdue University here including the materials and methods used, the results and the conclusions of the study here.

Images of Bed Bugs and Bed Bug Evidence
Fully grown bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They are oval and wingless. Their small size makes difficult to detect them with the naked eye. Their flat and tiny body enables them to hide in the tiniest cracks and crevices. Bedbugs can be ready to reproduce from the nymph stage to adult in just a few weeks. A small infestation can turn into a large one in a very short time. Exterminator services for bed bugs can be costly and requires help on the homeowners part. Clothing and items in drawers should be removed, cleaned and bagged to give your pest control operator access to these areas for treatment. See our other links for more on bed bugs and treatment services of these pests.Adult bed bug

With more than a million named species of bugs and insects, it is easy to see how they make up more than half of all living things on earth, yet only 1% are considered harmful. Most insects go about pollinating plants, and helping to decompose dead material. One of the biggest things insects do is keep pest populations down. The good guys battling the bad. At first it is difficult to tell the two apart, but there are beneficial insects that help control pest populations.
Encouraging beneficial insects in your garden and yard is one of the easiest, and greenest methods of pest control out there. An easy way to start is to get a small glass jar and gather a couple of the bugs in your garden, identify them and go from there, there are plenty of resources available to help with identification. Becoming familiar with several common beneficials and their preferred environment will help you in understanding how to use them to control negative pests.
Some beneficial insects commonly found in the garden are:
- Assassin bugs: Voracious predators (including some other beneficials); adults are black, brown or bright-colored slender insects with an extended needlelike beak and enlarged bristly front legs.
- Green lacewings: Also called aphid lions; ethereal-looking garden “good guys” with a slender pale green body, delicate gossamer wings and immense golden eyes, giving the appearance of a fairy prancing on garden leaves rather than the aggressive predator they are; natural enemies of several species of aphids, spider mites (especially red mites), leafhoppers, mealybugs, leafminers, thrips, whiteflies, small caterpillars, beetle larvae and insect eggs; its ferocious larvae are grayish to brown, mottled and spiny alligator-shaped.
- Minute pirate bugs: About the same to twice the size of an aphid; fierce, generalist adults are somewhat oval shaped, black to purplish in color with the characteristic true bug X-shape or chevron on their back.
- Praying mantis: Wonderfully weird, insect-hunting machines range in size from 2 to 4 inches long and have tremendous appetites, eating almost any prey they can overcome; adults feast on both pests and beneficials by ambushing predators.
- Soldier beetles: Also known as leather-winged beetles; adults are relatively soft-bodied, straight-sided beetles about ½-inch long with a red, orange or yellow head and abdomen; predators to a host of bad bugs.
- Syrphid flies: Commonly known as flower or hover flies, resembling bees; bright-colored adults are black or brown adorned with yellow banded abdomens and body markings; its larvae that are the predators, while adults feast on pollen and nectar; their movement from flower to flower makes them an important pollinator.

What NOT To Do When You Have Bed Bugs
- Do not Panic. Bed bugs can be removed with careful inspection and by using proper control methods.
- Do not try to kill bed bugs by using agricultural or garden pesticides. Using outdoor pesticides to control bed bugs can make you or your family very sick.
- Do not use products that appear to be “homemade” or “custom formulated.” Homemade products could be dangerous and they might make the problem worse.
- Do not use products that have labels in a non-English language.
- Do not apply pesticides directly to your body. This could make you very sick.
- Do not use rubbing alcohol, kerosene or gasoline. These chemicals may cause fires.
- Do not throw away your furniture. Beds and other furniture can often be treated for bed bugs. Throwing away your furniture can spread the bugs plus you will have to buy new furniture.
- Do not store things under the bed. Storing stuff under the bed gives bed bugs many new places to hide. This makes it more difficult to get rid of bed bugs.
- Do not move things from room to room. Moving your things from the room with bed bugs to another room in your house may spread the bed bugs.
- Call a professional pest management company that specializes in bed bug removal.

Article Written by Oklahoma Department of Wildlife
11 Things you can do to reduce problems with nuisance wildlife
1. Remove food sources. Pick up leftover dog and cat food at night and keep bird feeders out of their reach (or bring them in at night). Don’t let spilled food accumulate on the ground.
2. Prevent access to chimneys with a commercial cap made of sheet metal and heavy screen over the top of the chimney. Repair soffits to prevent access to attics and install strong, metal vent covers. Keep dampers closed when not in use, but consult a knowledgeable source to prevent a fire hazard.
3. Prune tree limbs away from the roof (10 feet away is best) or install a 3-foot wide band of sheet metal (6 feet above the ground), around the trunks of trees which overhang your house. This will reduce access to your roof by raccoons and squirrels.
4. Garbage cans should be made of heavy metal and have lockable or tight-fitting lids to prevent access; otherwise, keep them indoors as much as possible.
5. Install metal skirting (i.e. strong hardware cloth) around the bottom of a deck to prevent a wild animal from making a den underneath.
6. Provide shelter structures for fish in ornamental ponds and water gardens; cover the pond during the night with metal screening.
7. Cover window wells with grates, bubbles or hardware cloth.
8. Seal up holes around and under home foundations to help keep out mice, rats, insects and snakes. You can bury ¼ inch mesh hardware cloth 1-2 feet deep in places where animals might gain access to your crawl space through digging.
9. Fence gardens and cover fruit trees and berry bushes with netting, or use an approved non-toxic repellent spray.
10. Repair broken, weak, or rotted areas on the roof, soffit, and fascia of your house.
11. Mark large windows with strips of white tape or raptor (hawk) silhouettes to avert birds from flying into the window.
If you have a nuisance animal wildlife problem EnviroTech Exterminating can help solve your problems. We have a licensed Oklahoma Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator (NWCO) on staff. We offer Humane control of these pests. Call (918) 282-7621 for help!

Bed Bug Bite Survey – Does Everyone React to Bed Bug Bites?
The results of the bed bug bite survey we have heard so much about is reported in a new article published by PCT Magazine. The Sensitivity Spectrum: Human Reactions to Bed Bug Bites (PCT February 2010, Michael F. Potter, Kenneth F. Haynes, Kevin Connelly, Michael Deutsch, Erich Hardebeck, Don Partin, and Ron Harrison). This is new information, please take a very close look.
474 respondents, all with confirmed bed bug infestations, in Chicago, New York, Cincinnati, Louisville, Atlanta, LA and Miami. 66% living in apartments and 15% in single-family homes. All ages. 58% female, 42% male.
The breakdown for infestation level:
Infestation level | Bugs | Respondents |
Low | ≤10 | 34% |
Moderate | 11-100 | 47% |
High | 101-500 | 14% |
Very high | > 500 | 5% |
“Have you experienced any bites or skin reactions from the bed bugs in your dwelling?”
70% yes, 30% no.
Essentially the reverse of what was previously thought. Though there were also skeptics – The female/male differences were not statistically significant. And neither were ethnicity differences. The level of infestation was also not a factor.
Not so with age, however, “significantly more people over the age of 65 reported no bites or skin reactions than those who were younger. Forty-two percent of the eldest individuals surveyed said they had no bites or reactions from bed bugs in their dwelling, whereas 26 percent of those aged 11 to 65 reportedly did not react.”
This corresponds with an earlier survey where 76% of elderly tenants in one “severely infested” building did not react to bites (or reported not reacting). Possible reasons for this mentioned by the authors include reduced responsiveness to allergens in the elderly, medications that suppress the immune response (corticosteroids), and “diminished awareness due to other competing health issues.
The public health question, etc.
Other oft-mentioned symptoms from respondents living with bed bugs included nervousness, paranoia, anger, frustration, embarrassment, devastation and depression. Anxiety, stress, sleeplessness and depression are medically important symptoms that can lead to other conditions. Dismissing bed bugs as “not a public health pest” on the grounds that they are unproven disease vectors ignores the pain, suffering and emotional distress inflicted on their victims. When government agencies finally concede this point, additional resources may be allocated to combat the problem, as they were years ago.Click here for a link to the article in PCT Magazine

Rodent Pest Control Season in Tulsa, Oklahoma

House Mouse Season
When rains and chilly weather arrive in our Tulsa, Oklahoma pest control region, you know rodent season has arrived along with it. Although rats and mice can be year-round pest control problems, cold and rain send them indoors in droves, seeking warmth and safety for nesting. Other factors influencing rodent issues are new construction. With so much home construction and Environmental influences even new homes are prone to rodent infestations. If you live in a newer house and homes are still being built near by, rodents can be an issue. Broken Arrow, Jenks, Bixby and South Tulsa currently have a large number of homes under construction. This construction can push mice, rodents, rats, squirrels and other rodent pests from their natural nesting grounds to your home. Other factors such as flooding can push rodents in seeking warmth and safety. No area or home is 100% safe from a rodent infestation.
A small mouse problem can quickly mushroom into big trouble. A female house mouse (Mus musculus) can produce five to 10 litters per year, consisting of five or six mice pups per litter. Gestation period for a house mouse is 19 to 21 days, and the young reach reproductive age within six to 10 weeks. Only 5 to 7 inches long full-grown, including a 3- to 4-inch tail, these tiny rodents can nevertheless do extensive damage—including chewing of insulation from telephone and electrical wires—a serious fire hazard—and dangerous contamination of food supplies. Although house mice are not proven to cause the dangerous hanta virus, they are known to carry more than 200 other diseases, including salmonella and Leptospirosis, a disease with influenza-like symptoms.
Although there are many products on the market aimed at exterminating mice and other rodents, most can have unintended harmful consequences. Poisons can endanger pets or even children, and you could end up with a dead mouse inside your walls or attic, with the attendant odor of decomposition. Electronic signal devices claiming to deter mice have proven ineffective. Some people opt for live traps—however, caution that mice captured live in urban areas should be taken to Animal Control or a veterinarian to be euthanized; in more rural areas, a live mouse should be transported and released in a non-populated area at least one mile from the capture site—otherwise the risk of increased mouse population or reinfestation is high. Most experts agree the old-fashioned snap-trap is best. The animal is in most cases killed instantly; it can easily be retrieved and disposed of; and you know you got it.
As always, a trained, licensed and certified pest-control professional is your safest bet to remove rodents and prevent reinfestation. The pest control professional has been trained to identify entry points into your home so they can be sealed off and to recognize signs of mice or rat trails and nesting locations. For more about controlling and preventing mice infestation, call our office at (918) 282-7621
At EnviroTech Exterminating, our licensed pest control technicians are trained to work with you and your family to find the most effective means of controlling rodent infestations in your specific situation. Contact us today for a free inspection and estimate:

Amazing Pest Photographs! The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) Pest Photo Contest
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has announced the winner in its first annual Pest Photo Contest, a national online competition that challenged photographers to submit images of common household pests, rodents and small wildlife.Pete Elbert has won the grand prize of $1,000 for his photo submission of a yellow jacket.
Pete found the female yellow jacket bothering guests inside a hotel lobby in West Virginia. Hoping to get a few good shots of the stinging insect, he captured the pest in a plastic cup and set it free on some shrubbery outside of the hotel. Luckily, he was able to snap about 10 to 12 photos of the yellow jacket before it flew off into the night. To enter, photographers – amateur and avid alike – submitted their favorite pest photos to the PestWorld Photography Contest group on Flickr.
All entries were judged on criteria including originality and creativity, adherence to creative assignment and overall appeal.
The NPMA received more than 350 stunning pest photos from talented photographers around the world.
